paint your own musical landscapes

Paint Your Own Musical Landscapes!Writen by Edward Weiss

I don't know why, but I find the idea of interpreting nature musically to be very appealing. Maybe it's because I'm attracted to nature's beauty, but the notion of communicating that beauty musically has always intrigued me.

Not being a very patient person, I wanted to find a way to capture a musical idea very quickly and sketch out an entire piece all at once. Visual artists do something called a thumbnail sketch and I wanted to do the same thing for music.

It then occured to me that if I just sketch out the first 8-bars of the piece, and write in the first 2-bars of melody, I could capture an idea that would be remembered weeks or even years later. It's amazing but this actually works! The secret is the melody.

If you can't read music and want to do this just do what I do. I write down the note values (quarter notes, half notes., etc.) and write the letter name of the note beside the note value. One of the most important things I've discovered over the years is that the note value (it's time length) is what really captures the idea. Just think of Beethoven's fifth symphony for a good example. Da Da Da Duh... These notes mark the whole composition.

how to compose your own music using 8bar phrases

How to Compose Your Own Music Using 8-bar PhrasesWriten by Edward Weiss

Some people think composing is this miraculous thing that only genius's do. What a myth! It's a skill that can be learned. What can't be learned is the intuition that guides the creative force. What can be learned is the technique. And the most important part of composing technique has to do with THINKING IN PHRASES.

A musical phrase can be 2-bars long. It can be from 4 to 8-bars long as well. It is a unit of music that composers use, along with repetition and contrast to create ENTIRE SECTIONS OF MUSIC. There is no secret here people. It's like building up a structure. That's why music is often referred to as frozen architecture. It is built up. The building up creates FORM. A structure such as ABA form can be composed of the A section (8-measures) B section (4 or more measures) then back to the A section.

Now you may be thinking, it looks logical but how does it transfer into actual music? Ah, this is where you get your feet wet and actually try composing a piece. We start from simple means and learn the principles of repetition and contrast first. We start with an 8-bar phrase for the A section.

Now a problem arises. How do I fill up this section? You can either start with the melody or with the chords. If you've had a chance to look at my free lesson, you'll see that by improvising, MATERIAL IS INSTANTLY CREATED! This solves your problem doesn't it? Now, you may be thinking, how do I get this material into the 8-bar framework you've been talking about? First, you need to be able to count in 3/4 or 4/4 time. Not very difficult but if you can't do this now, there are many sites on the web that can teach you this.

Now it's just a matter of transferring this raw improvisational material into the 8-bars. Most likely, you will be jotting down your chord changes. I explain this in a lot more detail in my online class. It's a quick sketch method. You have the raw uncensored germ coming from your improvisations - you then write down what chords you are playing and perhaps the first 2-bars of melody so you remember what the initial impulse was.

The reason I use the 8-bar phrase is that it is a nice unit of time to work with. I don't try and reinvent the wheel here. It's been used for centuries and can be used in New Age music as well. Once you have this 8-bar phrase you can repeat it and add in another section (B) to add contrast.

This may be hard to understand by just reading about it. You have to do it in order to really understand.

college radio the most important radio level for musicians

College Radio: The Most Important Radio Level for MusiciansWriten by Kenny Love

For the self-promoting independent artist, the idea of taking on a radio promotion campaign can, in itself, become overwhelming. But, this idea is usually based on such artists attempting to obtain worldwide airplay on a local budget.

And, in doing so, self-promoting independent artists quickly discover another factor not usually considered previously... that engaging in a worldwide radio promotion campaign translates to hundreds and, possibly, thousands of CD units for media contacts alone.

As you can see, this can also quickly become a nightmare for indie artists, particularly, if the promotion budget only allows for the purchase of 1,000-CD packages at a time.

Starting in the 1980's, college radio became a dominant force in not only discovering independent recording artists, but also in introducing new artists to the general public. Hundreds of these particular artists have gone on to become established 'household' names.

Likewise, the college radio level has a continued history of presenting, practically, all forms of music, much of which would never see the proverbial light of day at the commercial radio level and, in many cases, neither at the non commercial level.

Therefore, if an artist has limited funds for radio promotion, it is highly advisable that the he begin exclusively with college radio for the following reasons:

* Far easier and faster access to airwaves

* Far more plentiful specialty and mix shows and programs

* Greater chances for both in-studio and telephone interviews to promote music releases

* More possibilities for station ID checks for further publicity

* Corresponding college campus newspapers that will more readily accept and support music aired on their campus stations for creating a campus-wide buzz

* A ready and built-in market in the campus community for repeated live performances to further support and supplement campus airplay and campus press coverage

* An opportunity for grassroots distribution through supplying both campus bookstores and campus music stores with music releases

Is the college market a viable market for your music sales?

Though the question is rhetorical in nature, please review the below U. S. college population statistics:

* There are 631 public 4-year colleges and universities that have a combined student population of 6,236,455.

* There are also 1,835 private 4-year colleges and universities with a combined student population of 3,440,953.

* Additionally, there exists 1,081 public 2-year colleges with a combined student population of 5,996,701.

* Even further, 621 private 2-year colleges host another 253,878 students.

This brings the average U. S. student population total to a whopping 15,927,987 minimum every year. And, more people are attending some form of higher education than ever before.

Now, even the least popular music genres are certain to find a financial comfort zone with a market of almost 16 million unique principals.

So, what results could really popular commercial music genres experience, simply by working the various entities of the college market, i.e., campus radio, campus press, campus bookstores, campus music stores, campus live performances? Quite pleasant ones, I would suspect.

But, remember! The above statistics only reference the United States college/university potential listenership. College radio also has a respectable portion of listeners who are *not* students.

Add to that, listeners of college radio who strictly listen to the streaming portion of college radio online, and who may, or may not, be in the college's geographical area, i.e., military service members.

Plus, there is lot more of the college market abroad, of which U. S.-based artists would do well to approach English- speaking nations first, i.e., United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, subsequently, moving into additional nations.

While it may (or may not) be true that it is possible for commercial radio stations to be the primary driving force behind most retail sales, that theory may not be so valid today, given the fact that:

* With the Internet, artists are no longer required to sell millions of CDs to make a great living financially

* Artists have greater and easier access to far more radio stations (broadcast, satellite, internet, college)

* With the college community, and all of its combined promotion and sales aspects (radio, bookstores, music stores, live performances), if conducted correctly, the college market campaign can equalize and, in some cases, even supersede commercial radio results.

Texas A&M University (44,618)
Michigan State University (44,227)
University of Wisconsin Madison (40,912)
Pennsylvania State University at University Park (40,828)

(The above figures were reported in Almanac 2004-2005, published by the Chronicle of Higher Education, August 27, 2004.)

What College Students Spend on Music:

According to a recent Harris Interactive survey, college students spend $200 billion...that's right...BILLION dollars per year, with 76% of the students having spent $2,746,000 on music alone.

Note: As an added advantage, the self-promoting independent artist should also create an Internet radio promotion campaign simultaneously, since most 'net stations are accepting of MP3 files for airplay, thus, reducing packaging and shipping costs of CDs to stations.

terje isungset igloo ice music all ice records music review

Terje Isungset - Igloo Ice Music All Ice Records - Music ReviewWriten by Kiva Boyd

Ah, the sounds of nature! Bird song choruses swirl and flutter. The wind elicits pops and swaying creaks from tree limbs. Insects buzz and whir. Thunder booms and lightning crackles. And then there is water. Water has so many voices it's hard to list them all. The whoosh and pitter of rain. The ceaseless growly hush of waves. The liquid applause of a waterfall. We're so used to the various sounds of water, it's hard to imagine life without them. The new cd Igloo by Terje Isungset poses the question of what would water sound like if not heard in a passive way, but if used actively as an instrument. The answer is, amazing!

This CD is just a lot of fun. It's a recording made at the annual Ice Hotel in Sweden. Perhaps you've seen it on TV before. It's that hotel that a group of artists and architects carve out of ice and snow for a few weeks in the winter. They light it from the inside so it glows in brilliant yellows and blues. Beds are carved from ice and covered with animal skin rugs. Ice shot glasses are filled with vodka and you sit drinking at a bar and on a barstool made of ice! From what I've seen of it the whole deal just sings out magic and wonder. Now from that same group of artists comes. Igloo. The cool thing about it is that all of the instruments are also carved out of ice!

So what do instruments carved out of ice sound like? Well, for lack of a better word, they sound watery. They are soft and organic with a surprising warmth. There is a hushed and mysterious quality to this music that is further enhanced by the ethereal, swirling vocals that coo and glide through it. At times the music drifts into Bjork or Sigur Ros territory but it never strays too far from a shimmery and warmly percussive soundscape. The instruments have wonderful names such as, Ice Harp, Iceofone and Ice Horn to name a few. It must have been great to be at the Ice Hotel knocking back a few vodkas and listening to this.

As with many conceptual pieces of art this work is best enjoyed as a whole. Certainly there are separate parts that stand out but an entire listen is immersive and engrossing. The CD packaging is both visually and tactilely engaging. It comes in a thick slip cover made from a textured and opaque plastic. The front has 5 strips cut out in the shape of icicles which reveal the icey blue color of the cover. An additional cut is made along the spine which reveals a small vial that contains water! One is tempted to throw the whole thing in the freezer for a few hours, pull it out and start rubbing and scraping it to make some music.

Igloo is a great release both in concept and execution. The sound (produced by minimalist drone-wizard Deathprod) is both surprising and exciting. You come away from it wondering what other music is out there hidden in our everyday lives.

where did the music video come from

Where Did the Music Video Come From?Writen by Ispas Marin

Although the first music video ever broadcasted was Video Killed the Radio Star played by MTV in 1981, some consider the music video to be much older than that year. It seems that the film Alexander Nevsky, directed by Sergei Eisenstein in 1938 had some extended images of battles which had been choreographed by Sergei Prokofiev. These new scenes were so innovative that they have lately been considered to be the first music video.

Apparently, the music video is even much older than these innovative scenes. The 1911 Alexander Scriabins symphony Prometheus: Poem of Fire was written for orchestra and light organ. Oskar Fischingers animated movies were considered to be other ancestors of the music video as they were called visual music and they were equipped with orchestral scores.

Max Fleischers short cartoons were also considered to be attempts of a music video. He created a new type of cartoons, the sing-along cartoons which he called Screen Songs. These short cartoons were inviting the public to sing along to famous songs at that time. Few years later, in the 1930s, these cartoons were changed; they displayed the musicians singing their hit songs in front of the camera in a live-action show.

Walt Disney also contributed to the music video evolution through his Silly Symphonies which were based on musical pieces. The Warner Brothers cartoons were also created around songs. But the most popular videos were the live music concerts, performing popular singers, videos which were displayed in theatres.

Bessie Smiths dramatized performance of a song was another attempt to make a music video. This performance consisted in a short film named Saint Louis Blues. It was very popular and it had been played in theatres for more than 3 years. She wasnt the only musician that appeared in short musical materials. Many musicians liked the idea and started shooting their own materials. Music historian Donald Clarke considers that Louis Jordans strange feature film Lookout is the official ancestor of the music video.

In conclusion, it seems that the first music video issue is still a controversial subject. The important thing that needs to be noted is that the music video is by far much older than the television which made it famous: MTV.

what in the world would we do without music

What In The World Would We Do Without Music?Writen by Duane Shinn

What in the world would you and I do if there was no such thing as music?

Can you imagine a world without music? No songs, no tunes, no rock, no roll, no jazz, no hymns, no boogie-woogie, no country-western, no symphonies. No singing in the shower. No whistling Dixie.

Lovers wouldnt have songs to romance to. There would be no such thing as our song. Sinatra couldnt fly to the moon. Elvis couldnt complain about people stepping on his blue suede shoes. Tony Bennett would have to write a letter about how he left his heart in San Francisco. Willie might go on the road again, but without a guitar. And Ray Charles would look pretty strange up on stage without a piano telling us that Georgia is on his mind.

Then when the wedding day arrived, what would the bride march down the isle to? A poem? Silence? Applause? And when the happy couple marched out of the church together, would they do it to the bark of neighborhood dogs, or perhaps all the wedding guests talking at once?

And at the reception, what would they dance to? The Funky Chicken just isnt the same without music. Since rhythm is part of music, no drums would even be allowed.

And the honeymoon I suppose would take place with radio news on, or perhaps the educational channel accompanied by the drone of an air-conditioner.

When baby arrives, do we lull her to sleep with a reading from Shakespeare? Or perhaps random readings from the dictionary or encyclopedia? Could we bore her to sleep with words?

Nursery rhymes would have to be chanted or recited instead of sung. School music programs would of course be non-existent, as would school choirs and orchestras and bands. When the school football team plays, there would be no school fight song. Cheerleaders would have to cheer and dance minus any music.

And when those birthdays roll around, we would have to all recite together in a monotone happy birthday to you.

And when duty calls, what would soldiers march to? What would take the place of music in parades, since there would be no marching bands? John Philip Sousa would have had to get a day job.

And on the 4th of July there would be no patriotic songs just speeches. At Christmas time there would be no Christmas carols. No rousing gospel music at Easter, no hymns in church.

And can you imagine radio without music? Nothing but news and talk shows and bla bla bla bla.

I dont know about you, but Ive had it up to here just thinking about it. Im heading for the piano now to celebrate the fact that our Creator gave us the wonderful and inspiring and uplifting gift of music that we all take for granted.

I think Ill play a nursery rhyme or two, then the wedding march, then Silent Night, then Auld Lang Syne, then Fur Elise, then the blues, then a little jazz, then and then...

music over time

Music Over TimeWriten by Barbara Brinson

Music is the art of combining vocal and/or instrumental tones in a structured manner.

Music has been around almost as long as the earth is old. We can designate medieval music as a beginning, although a precise time is impossible because the knowledge of that time period is too vague.

However, in the 1100s large volumes of written, notated polyphony and non-liturgical Latin songs began emerging before two major changes began to take place.

a) The use of the interval of a third as a stable harmony.
b) Humanistic orientation to text with music.

These changes took several decades, putting the beginning of the Renaissance somewhere between the 1420s (harmonies of Dufay) and the 1500s (humanistic texts of Josquin), which brings us to the beginning of opera in the 1600s. The Renaissance style ended around 1750 and is also among the clearest divisions of Western music.

Sometime in the early 1700s through the late 1800s, the best known pieces of European Classical music were written.

The 1800s was the beginning of a new era, because of a brilliant man by the name of Thomas Edison. This man was an exceptional inventor, on 12-6-1877 he finished one of his best inventions...The phonograph and had it patent on 2-19-1878. Now mind you it was a fairly complicated machine, using a metal cylinder with tin foil wrapped around it. The machine had two diaphragm-and-needle units, one for recording, and one for playback. When he spoke into a mouthpiece, the sound vibrations would be indented onto the cylinder by the recording needle in a vertical groove pattern. Edison gave a sketch of the machine to his mechanic, John Kreusi, to build, which Kreusi supposedly did within about 30 hours. Edison immediately tested the machine by speaking the nursery rhyme Mary had a little lamb into the mouthpiece, and to his amazement, the machine played his words back to him.

Now, we are going to get a little closer to the twentieth century of music in time in the 1900s. Starting in the beginning of the 1900s, there were disks (no, not CD's yet) used by recording studios to record music. These discs called records were then sold in stores for consumers to purchase and take home to play on their (phonograph) record player. The last of the records to come out was the 45 made for single songs.

It took the music industry decades to advance from the 45 record to new formats, such as 8-tracks and audio/cassette tapes. Once they were created it seemed as if the industry took off and overnight the CD (molded plastic disk scanned by a laser beam for digital data) was orn. These, like the record were, and still are, sold in stores for customers to purchase and take home to play on their CD players. Following shortly behind is the Mp3 player(standard technology and format for compressing audio signals into very small computer files. Sound data from a CD is compressed to 1/12 the original size) and ipod (portable Mp3 player).

Now, the pace has picked up even faster and we can download music right off the internet. In the beginning though, a company (I'm not going to mention any names) was allowing people to download as many songs as they chose for free. But, there was a problem..It was not exactly legal. A computer company names Apple made the process legitimate by allowing the artists to get paid for their work. The music industry now has the opportunity to license and sell it's content over the internet. The idea that people would pay for downloading music seemed a bit far fetched in the beginning. But, music sales have gone down by one-fifth since the millennium and downloads increased to over 500 million by July of 2005.

A revolution in the music industry was changed dramatically on February 23, 2006 when a 16 year old, Alex Ostrovsky came home and downloaded a song from the Coldplay concert he left just minutes before. Alex down loaded one of the songs for 99 cents from the iTunes Music store (which the Apple computer company started less than 3 years ago). Shortly after that an Apple employee called to let him know he has just downloaded the ONE BILLIONTH song. For being the lucky downloader, Apple Computer Company is sending him a $10,000.00 gift card for the iTunes Music Store, a 20-inch iMac, 10 ipods, and a scholarship to the Juilliard School in New York.

The one billionth download should go to show you how much this industry has taken over the music world over time!

play on the internet download free sheet music

Play on the Internet Download Free Sheet MusicWriten by Kevin Hansen

The Internet has become a valuable source of information and a standard form of research for just about anything. Music is no exception. There are many sources to obtain free sheet music. Whether you are looking for Beethoven or the Beastie Boys, an Internet search will result in many places to download free sheet music. Anyone looking to improve their music talent can benefit from using free sheet music. Struggling musicians no longer need to spend a lot of money at music stores; they can now download free sheet music.

Free sheet music sites will generally have a search feature to narrow down your options. When you go to a free sheet music site, there may be a category for the type of instrument. You can look up free sheet music for the particular instrument you play from piano to tuba. You may also look up free sheet music based on the genre of music. Whether you like classical or pop and rock, youll be able to find free sheet music to suit your needs. Many sites also have skill level searches for free sheet music. You can get beginner pieces to advanced examples of free sheet music. If you are looking for music for a particular song or by a particular artist or composer, you may search for free sheet music by those criteria as well.

Downloading free sheet music is a popular way for musicians to increase their library of music. A band that is just starting out can download free sheet music to learn new songs and add to their set. An established band can hone their skills by downloading free sheet music to learn more advanced songs. Individual singers can also learn lyrics and melodies by using free sheet music to enhance their repertoire. A band that has a set list of a variety of songs has better odds of getting paid performances than those who have a limited number of songs.

Free sheet music is a valuable tool for teachers and students. Teachers can download free sheet music in a variety of genres for the instrument they teach. This can make learning a lot more enjoyable for the student when they have a variety of song choices. Students can also search their favorite songs to practice at home using free sheet music. Students often learn the basics during class which may be a bit boring to them. However, searching for free sheet music on more popular songs may encourage the student to practice longer and enhance their skills faster.

Musicians used to have to purchase books of sheet music that may not have contained all songs that they needed. Alternately, they would have to purchase individual songs or try to work out the notes by trial and error. Those methods are time consuming as well as expensive. Today, the Internet provides a valuable resource for musicians and singers. By downloading free sheet music, they can have the music available instantly and at no charge.

why listen to music on the computer

Why Listen to Music on the Computer?Writen by Robert Gazonda

When I was a young lad growing up way back in the 60's and 70's, I often used to think how wonderful it would be to be able to custom make my own albums. A bunch of your all-time favorite songs grouped together in once place. It was possible to record tracks from the radio, or from tape to tape and LPs (Long players on vinyl disc, now replaced by CD's), but it was a laborious process and not really the ideal solution. Additionally, there were often just a few songs you liked on an album, so couldn't justify buying say 20 hits for 3 favorites. Well, that's all changed now that we can listen to music on the computer.

The wonderful thing about the internet is the opportunity it gives to search through the musical archives of time and find just about any artist from any era that you please. It really is that easy to both download and listen to music on the computer. Some of the modern PC's have great sound systems too, so it's not necessary to burn music to disk and play it in the ole Hi-fi. Yes, the internet is certainly a convenience that's for sure. I'm actually in the process of collecting my all time favorites and it's exciting to hear some of these artists and tracks after such a long time.

It's often said that people stop trying out new things once they hit their mid 30's and that includes food and music. This is why us olds keep going on about the songs of days gone by and disregard many new sounds, no matter how great they are. For people like me, the internet offers a wonderful opportunity to collect and listen to the nostalgic notes of the past. As I work at the PC daily, I get the opportunity to listen to music on the computer all the time and this includes the radio. In fact, I'm working in South Asia at the time of writing and it's just great to be able to tune into my favorite radio station back home.

What about you, do you listen to music on the computer? If not, then maybe it's time you got plugged in. Technology has come such a long way in recent years that the once humble PC has become not only a workstation but an entertainment center too. Yes, that's right, movies and music videos are all possible from the click of a mouse.

Sometimes, when I'm tuned into the radio, a song will be played from years back that I'd totally forgotten about, but it's a song that brings back many fond memories of that time. No problems! I just login to my favorite musical download website like ITunes or Napster, and for a tiny fee, I've just added another nostalgic noise to my ever growing archive in an instant.

But here's a tip. If you are going to start collecting dozens or even hundreds of tunes to you PC, don't forget to back them up externally too. What could be worse that your entire music collection disappearing with a hard drive failure? It's great to collect and listen to music on the computer, but it's wise to save copies outside of the PC too. Happy listening!

i blame the musicians

I Blame The MusiciansWriten by Nick Willever

I am blaming the musicians that want to get signed to a major record label!! I feel there is no need for you to get signed by a major label. Don't you want to help yourselves, plus everyone else in the same situation as yours? Well then lets stop having the goal of getting signed and have the goal of making your own profits and career! Its very easily explained on how to do this, watch musician tips for this tomorrow!

I don't blame the musicians for trying to get signed, I mean they get more cash then they would not going with them. BUT! Lets change that! Lets make it so they no longer exist and you can help yourself to profits instead! And those profits would be yours entirely not like 50 cents for 1 album selling, no you would get whatever you want to sell it for! I will be posting tomorrow on how to do this...

I am blaming the fans and anyone that are still buying CDs, merchandise and other things from major labels... Why blame them? Well I think you already know that answer... But lets say no one did buy CDs, merchandise, and whatever else the record labels try to push down our throats, lets say we only bought music that was sold from individual musicians and small labels that take a lot LESS cut into the CD, merchandise, etc... What would there be?

There would be a more equal opportunity for all musicians, no more media, radio stations getting paid off from record labels, instead they would be no more, or they would be down to the level of alot more record labels! There would be harmony and freedom to do anything you want. This is what we need to fight for! Or else we are no better than those 4 big record labels!!

Think about it for a little, take some time, calm down, and think you and everyone else all helping each other out and all moving in one direction, there is really no stopping us! So what do you say? Lets get this rolling already!

so just what is this americana music

So Just What is This 'Americana' Music?Writen by Sally Smart

Basically, Americana is Country Music. Hold on! Wait! Don't go clicking away yet!

We're not talking here about the cliches of Line Dancing, Stetsons and songs about losing Wife, Dawg and Car (not necessarily in that order).

What we're talking about is music with attitude, whether that be protest songs, introspective ballads or just plain old bad-ass hell-raising good time music - country yes, but Americana is also rock, blues, traditional bluegrass and even soul. Music without boundaries, held together by a common thread of realism, honesty and heart.

You like Springsteen and Neil Young? Well, Steve Earle is probably the most high profile name in Americana. If you're a fan of The Boss and Neil Young in equal measures and you haven't come across the phenomena that is Steve Earle then do yourself a favour and get hold of 'Guitar Town' or 'Copperhead Road' and see what you've been missing.

A whole new generation of singer-songwriters influenced by pre-'Achy, Breaky Heart' country music are making their mark today, inspired by another anti-hero Townes Van Zandt (a better songwriter than Dylan, many would say). And don't think Americana music is a closed-shop club of world-weary men. Take a listen to Tift Merritt as an example of a young girl with vocals as soulful and powerful as Aretha, or Patty Griffin, who can fell a person at fifty feet with her soaring vocals and incisive lyrics, and can blow you away with the hardest rocking alternative guitar music around.

So you don't want deep and introspective? Okay, Shooter Jennings might be just up your street - the son of Waylon, Shooter has hung out with Guns'n'Roses and obviously listened to Ted Nugent as a kid. Good time music, next generation. Take a listen on a road trip and you'll be singing along. Guaranteed.

Americana has its own association, and it is close to having its own Billboard chart. But Americana is independent; the Americana Music Association could just as easily have been named the Awkward Musicians Association. It is a free spirit, embraces all comers and loves the diversity of the dobro, mandolin, Les Paul and Stratocaster. It is conservative and liberal in equal measures and pretty darn hard to pin down.

In 2005 the Americana Music Association celebrated its 4th annual Honors and Awards ceremony which was held for the first time at the famous Ryman Auditorium in Nashville Tennessee, the spiritual home of Country Music. The AMA is happy to co-exist with the Country Music Association, but where the CMA Awards are a glitzy, showbiz affair, the AMA Awards are more down home, more real. Heck, they even have a 'Freedom of Speech' award.

Americana music is deserving of your attention. The Americana Music Association is run by people who care deeply about the music, about its influence and about retaining the true spirit of traditional music and traditional values. Yes, we love our Country Music and our singer-songwriters and our Texan attitudes, but you won't find any inverted snobbery about Shania, Tim or Faith.

So, enough words ... track down the music and judge for yourself.

Sally Smart has been running a successful Booking and Promotions agency for US acts touring the UK for a number of years. She has recently expanded the business into retail by opening a dedicated Americana online CD and download store.

Most of the clients and customers are already captive audiences who are waiting on a product or service, so why not promote (and sell) to them as they wait?

five steps to protecting your music and your money

Five Steps to Protecting Your Music and Your MoneyWriten by Jeromie Frost

There are a lot of independent labels out there waiting to use a talented musician to make quick money. The offers may seem hard to refuse, especially if you are a struggling artist or band that has struggled to get a record deal. A little money and exposure may seem great for the moment, but you run a high risk of getting contractually bound to that record label for the rest of your life. If a better deal comes along later, you may not be able to accept it, or you may get robbed of your rightful percentages.

All of this I learned the hard way. I was very fortunate to be able to get myself out of trouble and get a fresh start in the music business. I also took time to educate myself through books and the experiences of others, as well as mys own, to conceive a plan on how to avoid a repeat of what happened once before. This plan I believe will be very helpful for you ambitious artists pursuing your dreams. It is put into five easy steps, but make sure to read the details listed within each step.

1. Copyright your music

This is one of the most important things you can do to protect your music. Take the time, fill out the forms. There have been many instances where a person wrote a song and nothing ever came of it. Years later a signed band steals their song and remakes it. The original artist had it copywritten and sues the other record label for thousands if not millions of dollars. Instant riches! Protect your tunes.

2. Understand what you really want from your music

Figure out whether you are looking to sell your songs to record companies, or be the band and artist who performs the songs. There is good money in just writing songs for other bands. Ask for a percentage if that is your decision, because that will generally make you much more money in the long run than an up front payment. The only thing you sacrifice by writing instead of performing is the fame and exposure. Also, determine how much you stand behind your music. Are you willing to allow the record company to make several changes to your songs and try to mold you into their sound? How much do you believe in your product?

3. Get a contract lawyer and agent

You need an agent to represent your band to the record labels. This person doesnt need to be an established agent in the business. It can be a friend or relative if they can talk assertively and wont make any quick decisions without consulting the band. The record companies only want to talk to one person, not three, four, or five members of a band. It gets too confusing for them and they dont have the time. Make sure they are looking out for your best interests and not theirs.

A contract lawyer is especially important. Just call around and find a local lawyer who specializes in contracts. When it comes time to sign the dotted line, make sure the lawyer is by your side. Dont sign any contracts or documents until you and your lawyer have taken time to read them thoroughly and make a decision. If a record company is rushing you to sign any papers, walk away. Patience should be allowed to you if they are truly interested. If they rush you, they are planning to manipulate you.

4. Promote yourself tirelessly

Artists have been discovered a number of different ways. Every band has a different story. Use every media avenue you can to expose yourself nationally. Unless you live in L.A., New York, or Atlanta, local exposure isnt going to be enough. Think big with your music!

5. When offers are made, research them well before committing

Dont take the first offer made to you, only unless its a major record label and you researched what they offer very well. Signing bonuses are nice, but long term percentages are most important. Every artist gets a different percent with their label. The longer you have been in the business, the better your percents will get. Dont get too greedy. Aim high and let them work you down. Twenty-five percent on the total profits on you album is very high. Most bands dont get that. Remember, the suits and ties are the ones who make the big money. Without them, you are just selling CDs out of the back of your trunk. If you dont write your music, your percentages wont be near twenty-five percent. Singer/songwriters make more money.

Good luck as you venture into the formidable music industry. There are several independent labels that are legit, but there are thousands of them that arent. Be careful and try to follow these steps listed above. I hope you can gain good fortune using these five steps.

musical instruments make better toys

Musical Instruments Make Better ToysWriten by Chris Campbell

So many children's toys these days have virtually no value after a very short time. Musical instrument toys however have the potential to last for a lifetime. Not just from a durability perspective, but they are one of the few toys you can buy your children that can have a positive effect on them for the rest of their lives. Apart from the educational value, musical instrument toys can expose your children to the value of art and artistry through music. There are musical instrument toys for kids of all age. From infants to teenagers. Of course, at some point they stop being toys, and become real musical instruments. Apart from the biggest difference being price, the older your kids are when playing with musical instruments, the more likely the positive long term effects will be.

It Starts With A Little Rhythm

The younger the better. All babies love banging pots and pans, which is a pretty reasonably priced solution for a musical instrument, but at some point you may want to move them up to something thatdoesn't have spaghetti stains on it. Possibly even something a little quieter. Some basic little xylophones, or tiny baby sized piano keyboards would be a good choice. I've seen some music books with a piano keyboard attached. The keys were all numbered, and the music book had the numbers superimposed on top of the written notes. Simple enough for any child to pick up, as well as providing a great introduction to reading sheet music. Albiet at a very simplistic level, but still a start.

Some Professional Help

When introducing them to enough different types of musical instrument toys, you will have an opportunity to observe, which musical instruments seem to spark an interest in them. Or if your really lucky, you may notice that they have a naturalaptitude for certain instruments. While true musical prodigies are far and few between, there are varying degrees of talent for those of us below the prodigy level. As they get older, it may be time to seek out the guidance of a qualified musical instructor. While children will likely enjoy their early lessons immensely, there will come a point where it will become boring and tedious for them. It's important to strike a good parental balance at this point. While it's important not to let them quit just because their bored, it's also important not to force them to do something till they despise it.

Musical instrument toys can be a great choice for children of all ages. And with any luck, and a little persistence, it can have a positive effect on a child that will last a lifetime.

faith hill fireflies country music cd review

Faith Hill Fireflies Country Music CD ReviewWriten by Clyde Dennis

Country music super star Faith Hill has released her first CD in more than three years on the Warner Bros label entitled Fireflies.

This is her sixth release with each of the previous five being multi-platinum efforts, and nine country music #1's under her belt. Oh and don't forget about her being a multi Grammy Award Winner.

With a resume like the one just described Hill is clearly one of the biggest, and brightest stars in all of music. Not just country music.

Fireflies is somewhat of a return effort for Hill as she gets back to her country roots after experimenting outside the boundaries of country music on her last outing, Breathe.

I like Fireflies because of it's high production value, and the focus of the collection is once again on Faith's incredible singing voice.

The CD launches with a very vibrant tune in Sunshine & Summertime and from there proceeds to remind us that when Hill is in top form, as she is here, the quality of her voice is second to none.

Overall Fireflies is very easy to listen to and is what I call, must have music. I give it two thumbs up. Even the casual music fan will appreciate and enjoy Hills incredible vocal presentations provided here.

The standout tunes on Fireflies are Sunshine & Summertime [track 1, Like We Never Loved At All [track 7, and Paris [track 14. My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in Stuck On REpeat is track 5, Stealing Kisses. Very nice!

what is music

What is Music?Writen by Claude Gagne

That's a fair question!

Basically, you can call music any noise that is set to either a rythm as in percussions or that follows a melodic line of some sort.

Our early ancestors sitting outside the cave by the fire, after a hard day of gathering and hunting food, probably made music by tapping bones together or blowing in sea shells. While the rest of them would make conveniently placed grunts and howls.

Obviously, this was not Beethoven or Vivaldi musicality:) However, music is music!

This begs another question and that is: What is good music?

Altough this may seem like an impossible question to answer, there is a simple one.

Good music is any music you enjoy listening to! That's it!

Music is a deeply personal experience, the more varied your exposure to music the wider your taste in music will be. My own personal taste are very ecclectic to say the least. My personal collection includes over 5000 songs and will forever keep growing.

The music I create is computer generated and I will sometime voice over one of my poem. How good is it? I have been reviewed as an heir to the famous group Kraftwerk!

But again those that do not like the type of music would refer to it as CRAP! I am getting airplay in the USA, Europe and Canada thus far. I do sell a few CD here and there:)

As I write this I have 5 albums available and working on number 6...

Music is but one of my passion but definatly the most influential driving force behind all of my other artforms and it shows in my everyday actions.

Basically, look back at history, and you will find music as the corner stone of every society no matter how small a tribe or how big a nation. It is an unavoidable fact that music is and will always be here to take us along on the long road of life.
